I’ll have to say that cleaning rust and/or exhaust gasket flakes out of the eyes with a cotton swab has to be one of the least pleasant parts of doing exhaust work. Possibly topped only by cleaning out the rest of this stuff the next morning when REM sleep weasels it to the corner of the eye from whatever recess of the socket it was hiding.

Of course this time all that was topped by the fact that my SVX is now twice as embarassingly loud as it was due to the wrong seals having been sent. I need to kill my “fuck it, I’ll make it work with what I’ve got” reflex.

Yes exhaust bits suck. I got a few, and I found out that I had red spots on my contacts. Microscope tells rust, har! A few of my co-workers who’ve been mechanics for year have had sparkly eyes (Subaru guys, Imagine Java Black pearl paint flakes), and had a laser operation (not Lasik) to remove the bits. Some in the old days were less lucky as they had small metal tweezer help remove them.

One thing I do: wear eye protection. I am the ONLY technician in the whole dealer that wears eye protection. While I stand out like a nutcase, I no longer had flakes in my eye or contacts. Seriously, before I was wondering why I was going through 3 month contact sets in just 2 weeks.

this is why common sense tells us to work with eye protection. that or get new eyes on the black market a la Minority Report.

Bah, I don’t wear eye wear- if you ignore my glasses. They are a huge non-factor when it comes to getting things in my eyes.

I use the turn my head and close my eyes approach- but then again, I’m not the smartest thing around…..
