This is me making a “I saw 300” LJ post.
I saw 300!
I liked it a lot. I went into it admittedly knowing that it was going to be historically inaccurate, but then people enjoy Spiderman movies regardless of the violations to basic laws of physics. I guess my lack of history knowledge of that time period helped in much the same way as most peoples’ lack of physics knowledge.
Anyways… I went into the theater to see a fictional story and was pleased. The movie delivered.
I remember back in the day when I used to take the bus to middle/high school. my driveway was about 1/4 mile long.. longer than most but not terrible. 2 houses away in each direction were kids my age who also took the bus. I remember us all being asked to consolodate at one driveway to speed things up, and that was reasonable in my opinion. its not as if we were terribly far away from eachother. just 2 houses away in each direction… took like a minute for both of them to walk to my driveway.
So I got stuck behind a school bus on the way in. he stopped at 4 driveways in a row. each driveway was no more than 50 feet from the other. the bus stopped at each one… stopped, got moving, stopped at the next, etc. It’s completely beyond me why they couldn’t just all stand at one spot. they were almost withing speaking distance ffs. oh that’s right, I know why… each of them was sitting in an idling car with their parents since they can’t be expected to brave the elements for a solid 5 minutes. zzz.
I got a SNES emulator running on my PDA. Final Fantasy III! WHUT?

People who are incapable of feeling the waters before diving in should not expect help getting out of the water. I’m a moderator on a very large message board, and our “off topic” forum sees a ton of traffic. we get people coming from all over trying to jump in and become “one of the crowd” without first seeing what the crowd is like. It’s like going to a bar and expecting to be cool with the regulars on the first visit. It’s a culture you’re trying to dive into, and if your first posts come off like you think you are “all that” and should be treated as such… things will NOT go well. a lot of forum dwellers make it a game to see how mean they can be without actually breaking forum rules. It’s the internet. It’s not a friendly place. Take a few days to get to know the people you’re trying to mesh with before opening your mouth.
God forbid you ever make it to IRC…
Dealing with AT&T as a telco makes me want to stab people/objects/??(anything at all)??. After pushing random buttons to select random options in an attempt to be forced to a real human, the person I finally got transfered me to a fax machine. Now I’m talking to someone who might be the right person, and this is after being given 4 different numbers to call and being hung up on once. not including the fax machine.
Nobody is worse than AT&T at generating tickets and following up on them. Nobody.
Baby’s first while loop.
So my server has been rebooting recently for seemingly no reason. I thought I had it nailed down to a collection of corrupt files, but I’m not so sure anymore. In the time being I wanted to monitor when the box goes down, so I conjured up an idea for a simple looping script to send me a notification when my box goes down. I’ve become pretty handy with scripting but never had a reason to use a loop. now I do. And this will leave me an email record of every time the box went down.
This is pretty much how I learn everything. I “know that it exists” but can’t quite commit it to memory just by pining over it. it’s not till I have an actual application for it that I can learn it. I try to implement it and fail several times, and in that process I learn “how shit’s done, s0n.” Code behind the cut if you’re interested.
